Two California winemakers shared their menus for Sunday’s Super Bowl 51’s afternoon of feasting and fun.
John Komes, proprietor, Flora Springs and Jon Nathaniel Wines, admits he doesn’t have a “horse in the Super Bowl race”, but he still enjoys watching the game with family and friends.
“My wife Carrie cooks a mean chili, so we usually serve that with
all the toppings along with some guacamole, chips and a few other appetizers like my famous Seven Layer Dip!,” he said. “Of course we have plenty of ice-cold beer on hand, but I also like to serve red wine with the chili. This year I’ll open up some Flora Springs 2014 Merlot and also a couple bottles of the Jon Nathaniel 2014 Fabulist.
“Fabulist is a Cabernet-based blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc so it works well with the deep, savory flavors of the chili. Plus, some of the grapes used in the wine are from vineyards right outside my front door. It’s kind of nice to point that out to friends as we sip on the wine!”
Madrone Estate Winery winemaker Kat Doescher will be pouring Valley of the Moon Pinot Blanc and the Madrona Barbera.
“I will be serving my usual artichoke dip for the Pinot Blanc because of the saltiness and chili or ribs for the Barbera,” she said. “In my opinion, ‘You can’t go wrong with those guys all day long.’”
